Measuring up with Body Fat Calipers – Video

It’s about time I posted a new video, so here I am talking about my new body fat calipers.

One of my reasons for getting these was because a lot of people said I didn’t look like I was at 28% body fat in my ‘before’ photo – so I wanted to see how this measure compared to my scales. Of course, I was kind of hoping I’d come out lower.

Watch the vlog to find out the result…

Here are a selection of body fat calipers available on Amazon UK & Amazon US – mine are the Sequoia ones.

And here is an example of an online calculator that you can use instead of a chart if you like.

You might notice that the online calculator offers a few alternative types of measurement where readings are taken from more areas of the body. I’m thinking of trying those next time and comparing the results, just for interest.

I’d like to add that it’s really important not to get too hung up on any of these measurements. As you’ll see in the video, I take a pretty lighthearted view of it all. How you look in the mirror is probably the best thing to go on, but even then our perception of how we look can be coloured by our mood.

To me, as long as things are going in the right general direction over the long term, it’s going well.

Nice blog Julia. I might try some calliper’s myself as my scales seem to provide very variable results ranging from 17% to 26% body fat.

Thanks Richard. The calipers are generally considered more reliable – but you do have to make sure you measure in the same spot every time. I measured each area three times and took an average and will do the same next time to account for the fact that I’m unlikely to get the exact same place. Sounds like your scales are definitely out though – that’s a huge difference! Let me know if you get some, would be good to hear someone else’s experience. Julia :-)

The result with the calipers made me chuckle, it’s good that we can laugh about these things. You are right, you just have to go with how you feel & see yourself in the mirror and take all the technology with a pinch of salt. I’m weighing in on Sunday, fingers crossed for a loss this week!

You’ve got to laugh sometimes or you might cry! ;-) Best of luck at the weigh in tomorrow, let me know how it goes. Julia x

    Hi Julia,

You took the 31% figure very well. I have been thinking of getting some accurate testing myself before I decide at what weight division I should fight at and will let you know where I am at.

    Good luck!
